The slow return

The crossing back felt longer than the crossing out, though nothing about the boat or the lake had changed.

Blue seats and small red flags on a boat beside a calm mountain lake.

The way back was the same boat, the same blue seats and the same row of small red flags, but I noticed different things.

Going out, I watched the far side. Coming back, I watched the water just beside the hull, which barely moved. The lake was calm, and the boat barely rocked.

A return is the same line drawn in the other direction, and it never looks the same.

Notes for the road

  • The flags hung still for most of the crossing and lifted only once.
  • I counted the seats instead of the minutes.
  • Nothing to add to the map. Everything to add to the notebook.
