					<description><![CDATA[Past the bend the road climbs, and from the top the curve I had just driven looks like a line someone drew between the fields.]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Past the bend the road starts to climb. It is not steep, just steady, and the hills close in on both sides until the only thing ahead is grey tarmac and sky.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the top I stopped and looked back. The curve I had written about an hour earlier was below me now, a single pale line laid between green fields, with no other car on it.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">The same road, from above</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the seat the bend had felt sudden. 					<description><![CDATA[A paved road curves between green hills, and for the length of the curve the whole view turns slowly past the windscreen.]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop on this route is not a place so much as a movement: the long curve where the road bends between two green hills and the view turns with it.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before the bend there are only fields and sky. Halfway round, the hills open out and the road shows itself ahead, grey and unhurried, under a sky that could not decide between cloud and blue.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">I pulled over after the curve, not before, which is how I have done it ever since. Coming back, I watched the water just beside the hull, which barely moved. 					<description><![CDATA[Halfway across a calm mountain lake, in a small boat with blue seats and red flags, the shore stopped being the point.]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The boat was small and open, with blue seats in rows and a line of red flags along its edge. I sat near the front and waited for the moment when both shores looked equally far away.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">That moment is the stop. Mid-lake, the mountains stand back on every side and the water is so calm that the boat seems to be resting rather than moving.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">What the middle is for</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">On land a journey is measured by what you pass. 					<description><![CDATA[The second stop on the train is about the glass itself: what it shows of the fields outside, and what it reflects of the carriage.]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A train window is two pictures at once. Outside, fields slide by in long flat bands. On the glass, the carriage behind me floats over them, fainter but never gone.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">I spent most of this stretch trying to look at only one of the two. It cannot be done for long. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I chose the second carriage because it was nearly empty, and sat on the side where the fields would be.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first thing I wrote down was orange: a railway marker beside the track, bright against the green, gone before I could see it properly. After that the fields took over, flat and wide, with the reflection of the carriage laid over them like tracing paper.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Watching, not arriving</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">A train takes the work of moving away from you. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The walk ended on a grassy ridge where small stone cairns stand in a loose group, each a short stack of flat stones. Behind them there was nothing but sky, wide and very blue.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">I call this stop the far anchor because it held the whole route in place. Everything before it was on the way here; everything after would be on the way back.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Leaving things where they are</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone built the cairns and someone else will find them. I sat a little way off, wrote for a while and did not touch them. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop on foot is where the path meets a narrow suspension footbridge strung across a valley. A fenced lookout stands beside it, so you can see the whole span before you decide how to feel about it.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the lookout the bridge is a thin line between two slopes, lighter than it has any right to look. Up close it is all cable and plank and rhythm.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">I wrote this at the bridge end rather than the middle.
