Second carriage

From the second carriage the fields came past in bands, an orange marker flicked by, and the window kept a faint copy of everything inside.

An orange railway marker and farm fields are seen through a reflective train window.

I chose the second carriage because it was nearly empty, and sat on the side where the fields would be.

The first thing I wrote down was orange: a railway marker beside the track, bright against the green, gone before I could see it properly. After that the fields took over, flat and wide, with the reflection of the carriage laid over them like tracing paper.

Watching, not arriving

A train takes the work of moving away from you. What is left is watching, and a window that does not let you forget which side of the glass you are on.

Notes for the road

  • One orange marker, then nothing but fields for a long while.
  • The reflection showed the empty seats across the aisle.
  • For next time: sit facing backwards and see if the notes change.
