In the reference photograph, cloud has settled across the middle of the mountain and left the top clear. The summit, the band of cloud and the dark ridge in front make three layers, and this study looks at how that order holds a tall frame together.
What the cloud gives
Without the cloud, the snow and the forested ridge would meet in a hard line. The cloud softens that join and makes the peak seem to float, which is why the picture reads as still even though the weather in it is moving.
