This study sets two reference photographs by other photographers side by side. Each is built on the same edge, where water gives way to pale sand, and the question is how much of the frame that edge is allowed to take.

Reading the shoreline

Sand fills more than half of this frame, and the horizon sits high and straight. The boat is the only thing that breaks the waterline, so the eye settles on it and then drifts out to sea.

Placed together, the two frames rhyme more than their settings suggest. The sequence alternates them without labels and leaves the viewer to notice that one shore belongs to the sea and the other to a mountain lake.

In the reference photograph, cloud has settled across the middle of the mountain and left the top clear. The summit, the band of cloud and the dark ridge in front make three layers, and this study looks at how that order holds a tall frame together.

What the cloud gives

Without the cloud, the snow and the forested ridge would meet in a hard line. The cloud softens that join and makes the peak seem to float, which is why the picture reads as still even though the weather in it is moving.

In the reference photograph, a stone balustrade runs from the near corner of the frame to the far edge, with the pavement on one side and deep blue water on the other. Red lamp posts line the promenade, and apartment blocks stand on a rocky point across the water.

A line to follow

The railing turns out to be the subject. Its posts repeat and shrink toward the point, so the eye moves along them from the paving to the buildings and out to the hills on the horizon. Any crop of this photograph should keep the stone in view.

The reference photograph follows a gravel path that enters at the lower left and bends away between tall, straight trunks. Almost everything else is green, from the grass in the foreground to the canopy that closes over the top of the frame.

One way in

Because the path bends, the picture never shows where it goes, and that is what pulls the eye in. Small details reward a second look: fallen leaves at the edge of the gravel, and a blue container at the foot of one tree.

The reference photograph looks down a set of worn stone steps to the town below: red roofs, the harbour wall, a pale beach and the bay beyond, with wind turbines on the far hills. Low sun falls across the houses and leaves the grass on the hillside partly in shadow.

Counting boats

Most of the frame is sky and water, and the town takes up a narrow band across the middle. A handful of small boats sit inside the breakwater; they are easy to miss at first and become the reason to keep looking.

In the reference photograph, bare slopes come down from both sides and meet in a notch, where a distant snow peak shows. The water in front is shallow and brown over sand and stones, and it turns turquoise where the lake deepens toward the far shore.

Reading the colour

The colour change runs from front to back rather than left to right, so the picture reads like a depth chart. Light from above the frame adds a streak of flare and the sparkle on the near water.
