A cassette in pieces on the asphalt

Spotted on the walk home: a broken cassette and a tangle of loose tape on sunlit asphalt. No repair, no rescue. Just a closer look and this note.

A broken cassette and loose tape lie on sunlit asphalt.

Takes
Ten minutes at the side of the road

Needs
Nothing. I left it where it was.

Result
One photograph and this note.

On the walk home the afternoon sun caught something shiny at the edge of the road: a cassette, cracked open, with its tape pulled out and lying in loose loops on the asphalt.

Look before touching

The shell was broken open, so there was no telling what had been recorded on it. With the tape loose and tangled on the road, whatever was on it was unlikely to play again.

Decide what kind of find it is

Some finds are projects. This one was an observation: something that used to hold music or somebody’s voice, now just a pattern of loops in the sun. I took one photograph from where I stood and walked on.

Finished note

Not every find is a quest to finish. This one was ten minutes of paying attention to something I would normally step over, which is sometimes the whole point of walking home the long way.
