Everything for a pound

A stall where every book costs the same is a stall that has given up arguing about value.

A yellow sign reading Books £1 hangs over a stall of used books in front of tall shelves.

The sign is yellow, hand-lettered and slightly crooked. Under it, books lie spine-up and spine-down in the same box: a road atlas, two cookery books, a paperback with a cracked spine and a name written inside the cover.

One price, many reasons

A single price changes how people browse. Nobody weighs a book against its cost. They pick by the cover, the first line, or the name inside.

At a pound, a book is bought for a sentence.

The stallholder says the best sellers are the ones with notes in the margins. Buyers like knowing that someone read them first.
