Study A

What the pair shows

Both photographs hold one open poppy near the middle of the frame. What differs is where the eye finds the edge of the petals.

In Study A the edge is drawn for you: a pale rim follows each petal, and the flower sits small among seed pods and buds. In Study B there is no rim. The poppy is much larger in the frame, and its outline appears only because red sits against blue and green, with more poppies blurred behind it.

Red Among Leaves

What the pair shows

Study A has two greens. Broad pale leaves fill the back of the frame, and dark bronze-purple foliage sits close to the flowers. Between the two, the reds and magentas read as a crowd.

Study B has only narrow green: stems and thin leaves, broken up by blue cornflowers. There is almost no leaf surface for the red to sit against, and the poppy holds the frame by size alone.

One Flower, One Hillside

This pair is about distance. In Study A the camera is close enough to count petals, and one flower carries the picture.

In Study B the same kind of attention finds nothing to hold. The flowers are small and spread over the whole slope, so the colour itself becomes the subject. This study is filed In flower; its partner leads the next band, At scale.

The Yellow Slope

What the pair shows

Both photographs are given over to colour on the ground. The difference is in the boundaries.

On the slope in Study A the yellow runs all the way to the tree line with no border inside it; the only edge is the ridge against the sky. Under the greenhouse roof in Study B each colour keeps to its own area: the red bed ends cleanly at the lawn, and the purple fills the far banks. One reads as a surface, the other as a plan.

Beds Under Cover

What the pair shows

Under cover, Study A is organised in layers: a red bed in front, then lawn, then purple banks, with steel columns and trusses repeating overhead. The eye is led into the distance.

Study B has no direction at all. The dahlias crowd the frame, and the eye moves from flower to flower rather than along a line. Placed together, the two show what a layout adds to a planting and what it takes away.

Seed Heads and Pods

What the pair shows

After bloom is the band for what stays. In Study A only seed heads remain: a small white cluster above dried, star-shaped flower heads, almost lost in the grass.

Study B shows two stages in one frame: an open poppy, with pods and buds on the stems around it. It belongs here as much as in the first band, and it makes the point of the pairing: flowering and seeding happen side by side.
