A small flat has one good place to read, and it is rarely where the furniture was first put. Ours took two years to find: a corner by the window where the afternoon light arrives late and the lamp can take over without anyone moving.
Finding it meant moving things that seemed fixed. The shelf went to the other wall. The chair turned ninety degrees. The lamp, which had always been for the whole room, became a reading lamp and nothing else.1

Following the light
The test was simple: sit and read at the hour I actually read, in each season, and notice when I had to get up. By the second winter I did not have to get up at all. That was when the corner stopped being an arrangement and became a place.
